Employee involvement

Our leading employee involvement scheme is 'Bring a Book to Work Week'. Over the past few years it has enabled thousands of employees worldwide to use their love for books to raise money and make a lasting difference to our partners across Africa.

Held in a dedicated week each autumn, employees are invited to bring a book to work to donate to Book Aid International. For every book donated, we ask the company to donate 2 pounds to help cover costs of storage, selection, packing and dispatch of the books.

Bring a Book Week
During October 2006, 17,000 employees of five major companies took part in this event which supports readers in the developing world, raising over £15,000 and donating over 7,500 books to those in desperate need.  Our thanks go to everyone who took part!

Why is it important?
Nearly a billion people worldwide entered the 21st century unable to read a book. In Africa most people will never have the chance to own a book and it's common for one text book to be shared between six or more pupils.

The ability to read is at the heart of self-education and lifelong learning. Literacy underpins all educational achievement; it helps develop human potential and raises self-esteem. A literate person is an empowered person, able to make choices and ultimately increase their life chances.
