Dressing Up

We choose to wear different outfits for different occasions, putting on jumpers and scarves when it is cold and dressing up smartly for a formal event. Read our 'Clothes and Fashion' section below to find out what clothes children in Scotland are wearing and compare this with Uganda.

The two most famous Scottish wears are the kilt and the Tam O' Shanter.  The kilt was first used in the early 17th century, it could be used as a blanket or a coat, the kilt had many uses.  Every tribe had its own tartan kilt.  The Tam O' Shanter is a hat named after a famous poem by a man called Robbie Burns.  It is also tartan.

Our country's fashion is mainly jeans and long sleeved tops.  But denim is very fashionable too.  And dresses are only worn in summer.  Skirts and shorts are good for summer except for long skirts.  You can get short sleeved tops and strap tops.  Most schools wear school uniform.

The Herero Women: The original Herera probably came to Namibia from the northeast some four centuries ago.  They made their dresses from odd scraps of brightly-coloured cloth, which they skilfully combined in distinctive patches.

I think a traditional dress is unique because it is the most liked beautiful dress in Uganda. This dress is called a “gomas”.  It is worn during weddings, introductions, burials, on visitation etc.  Our elderly and grown up girls put them on when father-in-laws are around, it helps women not to show certain parts that are not to be seen.

Hello my name is Melissa. We have lots of different clothes.  My best clothes are skirts.  In winter people have to dress up warm because there is lots of snow coming.
