Armed with paintbrushes, paint, cloths and buckets, thirty nine eager members of the Business Services Division of LexisNexis, part of the Reed Elsevier Group, descended onto Book Aid International's Warehouse this September. As part of their Reed Elsevier Cares Week, Book Aid International was chosen to receive a day's worth of voluntary work. Their mission was to revamp the warehouse, home to our stock of over 400,000 books that are bound for our partner libraries in Africa.
The warehouse is often referred to as the 'heart of the organisation'. It is where we receive, sort, store and pack the books that partner organisations so desperately need. Its multipurpose use is made possible by the considerable size of the space, approx 675 sq metres. As a result it is quite difficult to keep clean, especially because constant deliveries bring in dust, dirt and damp which put the books at risk. So, when the LexisNexis staff offered their help we knew exactly how to put it to good use.

The volunteers, which included Directors and managers alike, were split into teams of cleaners and painters. By the end of the day, not only had they visibly transformed our warehouse and created a much nicer environment for our Operational team to work in, but volunteers had built and strengthened relationships within and beyond their teams.
On behalf of Book Aid International,
Thanks LexisNexis!
